Flag Since Mintel’s last report into the market, the numbers of weddings has remained roughly static, and the continuing decrease in weddings in religious settings is being offset by more weddings in licensed locations like stately homes or castles. This means that broadly, demand for long wedding gowns is holding up. However, there are two issues that are having an effect on the market and are creating concern. The first is the growth of Internet trading. While the Internet has been around for a long time, growth in its use for shopping in the last two years has encouraged many more consumers to turn to the Internet for a wide range of goods. Although most bridalwear suppliers do not supply Internet traders directly, there is a growing grey market, and Internet traders are undercutting the prices usually charged by mainstream shops.

The second issue is connected to the trade quotas imposed by the European Union in 2005, which has disrupted supply of dresses from China. This is creating difficulties for some suppliers, as around 85% of dresses for the UK bridalwear market are now made in China.

This report examines the market for bridalwear, looking at the factors influencing growth. It also looks at consumer attitudes to weddings and bridalwear through specially commissioned research. It examines the hypothesis that for a wedding, most women would prefer to pay for the personal service of a retailer, rather than risk using direct Internet suppliers.
