This study examines the US market for glass fibers. Historical (1996, 2001 and 2006) data and forecasts to the years 2011 and 2016 are presented by type (glass wool insulation and textile glass fibers). Each major type includes information on supply and demand, markets (e.g., construction, motor vehicles, marine, electrical and electronic, consumer and others) and market share. Optical glass fibers are excluded from the scope of the study. The term “demand” is used synonymously with “consumption” and equals production plus imports, minus exports. The words “reinforced plastics” and “composites” are used synonymously, as are “glass wool” and “fiberglass.” Both captive and merchant consumption are included in the data. Companies covered include glass fiber and resin producers, as well as manufacturers of glass fiber fabrics, and compounders and manufacturers of reinforced plastic products.
Information and data on glass fibers were obtained from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including government and trade associations,
industry participants, online databases and other Freedonia studies. Consultations with personnel of the resin producers, reinforcement producers, additive suppliers, resin distributors, end users, consultants, industry specialists and trade associations were pursued. Secondary data were obtained from the
government, trade associations and other private sources, including material from the American Chemistry Council, Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association,
Composite Fabricators Association and the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association.
